History & Politics[]

Devlin[]

Devlin, a Glottage legislator, was instrumental in imposing Glottage's faiths and system on the other regions of the Peninsula through the enforcement of "Devlin's Edicts". As a result, the Glottage police force has jurisdiction throughout the country, The timeline is not entirely clear, but it's likely that the Edicts occurred 35-45 years prior to the events of the story.[2]

The Religious Wars[]

We also know the Peninsula was at war with the Consolidated Linger Straits at some point over 50 years ago, (Prior to Devlin's edicts)[3]. There seems to be continued political tension between the CLS and the Peninsula, as the CLS threatens 'severe political consequences' if Paige is not released[4].

Political Territories[]

The country is divided into administrative and electoral regions known as territories. Each territory has an elected official known as an adjudicator which make up the governing body. This elected body is referred to as the Legislatures. The High Adjudicator is the governor of the Legislatures.

  2. The story suggests that Devlin's Edicts occurred when Carpenter was a child, prior to living with Nana Glass. Her parents were arrested and sacrificed as a result of the Edicts, which distinguished between legal and illegal gods. As a result, Carpenter and her brother went to live with Nana Glass, who routinely cursed Devlin (Chapter 12: And To Fight Is Just To Choke). Carpenter lived with Nana Glass when she was less than 10 years old. Assuming Carpenter is in her 40s or 50s, that puts the Edicts 35-45 years ago. We are told at another time that the Edicts occurred after the last war with CLS, which occurred approx. 50 years ago.
